Where the GMA pallet came from

In the mid-20th century, the grocery industry faced a chaos of pallet sizes that slowed loading and clogged warehouses. The Grocery Manufacturers Associationpromoted a single footprint — 48 inches by 40 inches — sized so two pallets sit side by side across a standard trailer and container width, and so common grocery cases stack cleanly on top. Adoption snowballed: the more 48×40 pallets existed, the cheaper and more convenient they became, until the “GMA” became the de facto national standard it is today.

That network effect is why it remains the backbone of our recycled palletstock and the default answer to “which pallet do I need?” for most Tucson businesses.

Board layout, described

Picture the pallet from above. The top deckruns seven boards across the 48-inch length: wider “lead” boards cap each 40-inch end for strength where forks and loads bear down, with five narrower boards spaced between them. Underneath, three stringers run the full 48-inch length — one at each edge, one down the center — forming the tunnels a forklift enters. The bottom deck adds roughly five boards for stability and to spread floor load.

On a stringer pallet, the two outer stringers are notchedso a forklift can also enter from the 40-inch sides — that's “partial 4-way” entry. On a block pallet, nine blocks (four corners, four edge midpoints, one center) replace the stringers, and perpendicular bottom boards create clear openings on all four sides for true 4-way access.

The chamfered (beveled) leadboardsare easy to overlook but matter: without that bevel a pallet jack's wheels catch on the bottom deck instead of rolling up onto it. A missing or square-cut leadboard is a common reason a used pallet gets down-graded.

“GMA 48 × 40” describes a footprint, not a single construction. The two families that fill it are the stringer pallet and the block pallet. They ship the same load on the same footprint, but they enter, rack, and repair differently — and pooled fleets almost always run block.

The headline “up to ~4,600 lb static” is only useful once you know which of the three ratings you are reading, and how much grade and species move it. Static is the weight a fully floor-supported pallet holds; dynamic is what it carries while a forklift moves it; racking is the lowest, because the pallet spans an open rack and must resist deflection. Always de-rate for racking.

The pallet itself is older than the standard. Wooden skids and platforms spread through American warehouses alongside the forklift in the 1920s and 1930s, and World War II drove mass adoption as the military standardized materials handling to move supplies at unprecedented scale. What does GMA stand for?

What are chamfered leadboards and why do they matter?

Chamfered leadboards are the end deck boards whose bottom edge is beveled. That bevel lets a pallet jack's wheels roll up onto the bottom deck instead of catching on a square edge. A missing or square-cut leadboard is a common reason a used pallet gets down-graded, because it makes the pallet harder to move.

How many nails are in a GMA pallet?

A typical stringer 48×40 uses roughly 60 to 90 fasteners, usually helical or drive-screw nails chosen for high withdrawal resistance so the deck stays fastened to the stringers under repeated fork entry and load flexing. Block pallets use more because they have more joints.

Which wood species is best for a 48×40?
