What actually happens to a landfilled pallet
When a pallet goes in the dumpster, it doesn't disappear — it changes categories. It stops being an asset and becomes construction & demolition (C&D) debris, which is one of the largest waste streams in the country by weight. Wood is a huge share of that stream, and most of it is perfectly reusable at the moment it's discarded.
Buried in a lined landfill, that wood doesn't compost the way a backyard pile does. Landfills are low-oxygen by design, so organic material decomposes anaerobically and generates methane. Pound for pound over its atmospheric lifetime, methane traps far more heat than the CO₂ the tree originally captured. So landfilling wood does two bad things at once: it wastes stored carbon and it manufactures a more potent greenhouse gas on the way down.
The three fates of a used pallet
- Reuse. The best outcome. A sound pallet — or one that just needs a board or two — goes straight back into service. Zero new lumber, minimal energy, carbon stays stored. This is what buying recycled and selling your cores both feed.
- Recycle. Too far gone to reuse whole? Usable boards are salvaged for repairs and combo pallets; the rest is ground into mulch, bedding or biomass. Still no landfill. See how recycling works.
- Landfill. The dead end. You pay to bury a resource, then it emits methane for years. There is almost no scenario where this is the rational choice for a wooden pallet.

Are wooden pallets recyclable?
Almost always, yes. A standard heat-treated, untreated softwood or hardwood pallet is one of the most recyclable items on a loading dock. Even a badly broken pallet has value: usable boards and stringers are salvaged for repairs, and whatever's left is ground into landscape mulch, animal bedding or biomass fuel. The only pallets we can't take are ones contaminated with chemicals, paint, oil or hazardous residue.
Can you throw pallets in a regular dumpster?
You can, but it's usually the worst option on every axis. Wood is bulky, so it eats dumpster volume fast and drives up your haul frequency. When that dumpster hits a construction-and-demolition (C&D) transfer station, you often pay per ton to bury material that a recycler would have taken for free — or paid you for.
Do pallets decompose in a landfill?
Slowly and badly. Modern landfills are engineered to limit oxygen and moisture, so buried wood breaks down anaerobically over decades and releases methane — a greenhouse gas roughly 25 to 80 times more potent than CO₂ over its lifetime. Wood that stays in use as a pallet, or is aerobically composted as mulch, avoids that methane pathway entirely.
Is it cheaper to recycle pallets or dump them?
In nearly every case recycling wins, and often it flips from a cost to a payment. Instead of paying dumpster rental plus per-ton C&D tipping fees, you can sell sound cores to us or have mixed loads picked up at little or no cost. How much carbon is 'locked' in a pallet?
A 48×40 GMA pallet is roughly 40 lb of solid wood, and wood is about half carbon by dry weight. That timber pulled CO₂ out of the atmosphere while the tree grew. Keeping it in circulation as a pallet keeps that carbon stored and avoids the emissions of milling a brand-new one — we estimate about 11 kg CO₂e avoided per reused pallet.

Why C&D debris and 'carbon-in-wood' matter
The C&D debris angle
The moment a pallet enters a dumpster, it stops being inventory and becomes construction & demolition (C&D) debris — one of the largest waste streams in the country by weight, and one in which wood is a dominant share. The uncomfortable part is that most of that discarded wood is reusable at the instant it's thrown out. It isn't worn out; it's just unsorted. C&D transfer stations typically charge by the ton, which means heavy wood is exactly the material you least want to be paying to bury.
The carbon-in-wood explainer
A growing tree is a carbon pump: photosynthesis pulls CO₂ from the air and lays it down as wood, which is roughly half carbon by dry weight. When that tree becomes a pallet, the carbon comes along — a 40 lb pallet holds on the order of 9 kg of stored carbon. As long as the pallet stays in use, that carbon stays out of the atmosphere. Two things release it: burning (which at least displaces fossil fuel) and anaerobiclandfill rot (which is the worst case, because it also generates methane). Reuse is the option that keeps the pump's work banked.
Why methane is the villain
Landfills are engineered to be dry and low-oxygen, which is great for containment and terrible for wood. Instead of composting cleanly the way an open pile does, buried organic matter breaks down anaerobically and releases methane — a greenhouse gas roughly 25 to 80 times more potent than CO₂ over its atmospheric lifetime. So landfilling a pallet manages to be doubly wasteful: it throws away stored carbon and manufactures a stronger greenhouse gas on the way down.

How much does it cost to dump a load of pallets at a landfill?
You rarely pay per pallet — you pay per ton. Wooden pallets are heavy and bulky, so a mixed load adds up fast, and C&D tipping fees are charged on top of dumpster rental and haul pulls. Because a used pallet has resale or recycling value, dumping it means paying to destroy an asset you could have sold. That's why the swing between routes is so large.
Isn't burning waste wood carbon-neutral, so landfilling is fine?
Landfilling and burning are two different things. Burning clean wood for biomass releases the carbon but displaces fossil fuel and avoids methane — which is why grinding to biomass is one of our end-of-life routes. Landfilling does the opposite: it buries the wood in a low-oxygen environment where it rots anaerobically and produces methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas than the CO₂ the tree stored. Keeping the wood in use as a pallet beats both.
Does recycling pallets really reduce demand for new lumber?
Directly. Every pallet that gets reused, repaired or remanufactured is a pallet that didn't have to be built from freshly milled lumber. Repair and combo remanufacture stretch each tree's worth of wood across several service lives, which is the whole reason the reuse route shows up as trees-worth-of-timber saved in the Second-Life Ledger.
