There is no single global pallet. ISO 6780 recognizes six footprints, and exporters must match the destination market. If you're shipping overseas, remember the wood also needs an ISPM-15 heat-treatment stamp — the footprint and the phytosanitary treatment are two separate requirements.

Beyond the headline footprints, dozens of legacy and niche sizes still circulate across North American docks. This extended list captures the ones a Tucson buyer is most likely to encounter in a mixed used load, with both units and the entry style you should expect. Sizes marked 2-way are stringer pallets whose outer stringers are not notched — a forklift can only enter from two sides.

Here the five most size-sensitive sectors are broken out with the construction traits their pallets tend to carry. These specs run tighter than a general-freight unit — a pharma pallet is dimensioned for cleanroom flow, a chemical pallet for drum weight, a retail display pallet for shopper safety on a store floor.

International ISO 6 sizes & the Euro EPAL family
ISO 6780 recognizes six pallet footprints, and no single one dominates worldwide — which is exactly why exporters must confirm the destination market. Europe complicates it further with the EPAL family, a set of licensed block-pallet sizes carried by the European Pallet Association pool. All export wood also needs an ISPM-15 heat-treatment stamp — the footprint and the phytosanitary treatment are separate requirements.

Footprint area & cube utilization
Footprint area tells you how much floor a pallet claims; cube utilization tells you how well that footprint fills a standard truck or ocean container. The North American 48 × 40 was engineered so two pallets sit across a 96-inch trailer with almost no wasted width — which is a large part of why it dominates. The figures below assume a 53-ft dry van (about 630 in usable length, 98 in width) and are approximate.

How much weight can a standard pallet hold?
A well-built 48×40 GMA pallet typically holds a static load (sitting on the floor) up to about 4,600 lb, a dynamic load (being moved by a forklift) up to about 2,800 lb, and a racking load (edge-supported in a rack) up to about 2,800 lb. These are ranges — species, board thickness and grade all shift the numbers, so never rely on a headline figure for critical racking.
What's the difference between static, dynamic, and racking load?
Static load is the maximum weight a pallet can bear while resting fully supported on the ground — the highest of the three. Dynamic load is what it can carry while being lifted and moved. Racking load is the lowest, because the pallet is supported only at its edges and must resist deflection over an open span.
Is a 48×40 the same as a 40×48 pallet?
Physically it's the same footprint, but the notation tells you the orientation. 48×40 lists the deck-board (stringer) length first; 40×48 flips the reference for cross-docking or racking layouts. The entry side and stringer direction matter for forklift access and rack support, so confirm orientation, not just area.
Which conversion factor turns inches into millimeters?

Why does the 48×40 fit a trailer so well?
A standard trailer is about 98 inches wide inside. Two 40-inch pallet widths sit side by side (80 inches) with room to spare, and the 48-inch length runs down the trailer. That two-wide fit wastes almost no floor, which is a major reason the GMA footprint became the North American default.
What is the difference between the EPAL 1 and the ISO 1200×1000?
The EPAL 1 is 1200×800 mm — the classic branded Euro-pallet carried in the EPAL exchange pool. The ISO 1200×1000 mm (EPAL 2/3) is a larger, heavier industrial footprint used for chemical and export freight. Both are block pallets, but they are not interchangeable in a pool program.
Which international size should I ship to Asia?
It depends on the country. Japan and much of Southeast Asia commonly use the 1100×1100 mm footprint, while some markets accept the 1200×1000 mm ISO size. Confirm with your consignee before building, and remember the wood still needs an ISPM-15 heat-treatment stamp regardless of footprint.
Can I stack two different pallet sizes in one shipment?
You can, but mixing footprints wastes cube and complicates racking at the destination. If you must mix, put the larger, heavier footprints on the bottom and keep the load stable. For repeat lanes, standardizing on one footprint almost always lowers total cost.
How do I read a load rating I did not build?
You cannot reliably eyeball a used pallet's capacity. Species, board thickness, repair history, and grade all shift the number. Use the ranges in this chart for planning, and for any safety-critical or high racking, ask us for a spec sheet on the exact build you are buying.
