How Pallet Reuse Supports Your ESG and Scope 3 Reporting

When companies build their first greenhouse-gas inventory, pallets are almost always an afterthought. They should not be. Pallets are a purchased good, a packaging material, and a waste stream all at once, which means they touch several Scope 3 categories simultaneously. For a warehouse or distributor, a deliberate pallet strategy can generate some of the cleanest, most auditable reductions in the entire report. Here is how to make that case.

A quick refresher on the three scopes

Under the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, emissions fall into three scopes. Scope 1 is what you burn directly, like forklift propane or a boiler. Scope 2 is the electricity you buy. Scope 3 is everything else in your value chain, upstream and downstream, and for most non-manufacturing firms it is the largest slice by far, often 70 to 90 percent of the total. Pallets live almost entirely in Scope 3.

1. Shift procurement toward reused stock
