Grading is the language of the recycled-pallet market. When a broker quotes you a price on a truckload of "Grade B 48x40 GMA," they are compressing a whole set of physical expectations into a single letter. If you do not speak that language, you either overpay for cosmetic perfection you do not need, or you underspend and end up with pallets that fail in your racking. This field guide translates the grade codes into things you can see, touch, and measure on the dock.

What "grade" actually measures

A pallet grade is a bundle of three separate judgments: structural integrity, repair history, and cosmetic condition. The North American standard reference point is the GMA 48x40 in (1219x1016 mm) four-way stringer pallet, and most grade language is written around that footprint. A grade tells you how many boards are original versus replaced, whether stringers have been repaired with plugs or companion blocks, and how much staining, splitting, or wear the deck shows.

Grading is not perfectly standardized across the industry, so two yards can disagree on the same pallet. What follows is the mainstream consensus, which is what we sort to at our Tucson yard.

Grade A: the near-new tier

A Grade A recycled pallet has been used, but you would struggle to tell. Every board is original or a single flush replacement, the stringers are uncracked and unrepaired, and the deck is clean enough to sit under retail displays or run through automated conveyors and stretch wrappers without jamming. Because grade A pallets behave predictably, they are the safe choice when a machine, not a person, handles the pallet, and when the pallet will carry a full rated dynamic load.

Grade B: the workhorse

Grade B is where most of the market lives. These pallets have been repaired at least once. You will typically see one or two companion blocks (a short reinforcing block nailed alongside a cracked stringer) and a few replaced deck boards that may not perfectly match the originals. Structurally they are sound and safe for general warehouse racking and shipping, but the cosmetic irregularity and the occasional protruding board make them a poor fit for high-speed automation. For the overwhelming majority of standard shipping tasks, Grade B is the value sweet spot.

Grade C: the budget tier

Grade C pallets are heavily used and visibly weathered. Expect multiple repairs, plugged stringers, mixed-width replacement boards, and splits or chips. They are still functional for internal moves, one-way shipments where the pallet will not come back, and static storage of forgiving loads. The trade-off is unpredictability: because repair history varies widely, you should verify capacity against your actual load rather than assuming the full rating.

How to grade a pallet in ten seconds

  1. Flip it and count stringer repairs. Zero equals A territory; one or two equals B; three-plus equals C.
  2. Scan the deck for replaced boards, mismatched color, and non-flush nails.
  3. Press on any suspicious board to feel for hidden cracks or rot.
  4. Check the leading deck boards, the ones a forklift or jack contacts first, for chips.
  5. Look for the mold and stain pattern; heavy black staining usually pushes a pallet toward C.
Rule of thumb: buy the lowest grade that safely carries your load and survives your handling process. Paying for Grade A when Grade B ships your product just fine is money left on the dock.

Matching grade to the job

The right grade is a function of who handles the pallet and how far it travels. Automated equipment and customer-facing displays justify Grade A. Routine racked storage and truck shipments run happily on Grade B. Short internal hauls and disposable one-way loads are ideal for Grade C. If you are exporting, remember that grade and the ISPM-15 heat-treatment requirement are independent: a Grade C pallet can still be properly heat-treated, and a pristine Grade A pallet is useless for export if it lacks the stamp.
